The Broken Bells may have just released its self-titled debut album in March 2010, but these guys are far from new to the music industry. Artist-producer and former Athens, GA resident Brian Burton (better known as Danger Mouse) and the Shin’s lead vocalist and guitarist James Mercer make up the indie rock band.
Fans have been waiting for the melodic, experimental album since it was first announced in 2009 and got a much-anticipated taste of the lead track, The High Road, when it was released as a free download on the band’s web site early this year.
Friends since 2004, Burton and Mercer have finally gotten together to produce a full-length album loaded with pleasantly esoteric tracks that will have you on your feet grooving one minute and lounging to the rhythmic selections the next. One thing’s for sure, though, the lyrics to each and every song are sure to be stuck in your head for the long hall, as they’re about as easily singable as any recent additions to the American indie rock scene.
Those who are familiar with the work of Burton (Danger Mouse) will easily recognize his handy work throughout the album but especially on The High Road. From its funky beats a la Gnarls Barkley (which he formed with Cee-Lo), to its electronica-laden synth and feel good vocals a la The Gorillaz’ Demon Days (which he produced), The High Road simply has Burton’s fingerprint all over it. Tracks like Sailing to Nowhere have an almost Beatles-esque feel, and seem to create an entirely new genre of music – not quite experimental, not quite rock but exactly right!
Take a listen to Broken Bells self-titled debut release and you’ll find yourself wondering how we ever got by without this musical power couple. Burton and Mercer are imaginative, fresh and, ultimately, the kind of talent that can create a 10-track album of indie hits. Trust us, Threaders, there’s not one song here that you’ll want to skip on your iPod, and it’s all so well proportioned, that it’s truly a magical mystery tour that’ll make you feel fine.
