You know we can’t resist an amazing non-profit organization here at MyDailyThread. Lucky for us, there are so many worthwhile charities operating in Atlanta. Starting this Thursday, April 29, 500 Songs for Kids is back in Atlanta.
The 10-day event raises funds to proceed the Songs for Kids Foundation, which enriches the lives of children in need through music. Songs for Kids brings musicians to hospitals, special needs camps and any place kids need a little musical joy in their lives. Far more than just musicians playing for children in need, Songs for Kids transforms children into stars, as they participate in live shows. According to the Songs for Kids web site, “Each hospital and camp activity is a unique experience, and it’s not just the kids who benefit from [the] programs. The families, hospital staff and camp personnel also participate and enjoy our programs. Even kids who can’t leave their rooms or are undergoing lengthy treatments are treated to visits and performances by musicians.” Atlanta’s 500 Songs for Kids annual fundraiser helps support innovative programs like Kids Rock!, which pairs music producers and engineers with kids and helps them write, play and record original songs.
The 2010 500 Songs for Kids event kicks off at Smith’s Olde Bar April 29 and runs through May 8. This year’s theme is the 500 Greatest Era-Defining Songs of All Time as performed by 500 local and national acts including Gavin DeGraw, Arrested Development, Cee-Lo, Butch Walker, Angie Aparo, Edwin McCain and Drivin and Cryin’, Cracker, Mute Math and more. Songs include It’s the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine) by REM, Beds are Burning by Midnight Oil, Karma Police by Radiohead and Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. Added bonus? Each song is performed by a different artist.
